Fresh bedding feels wonderful, but frequent washing can slowly affect softness, color, and shape when the wrong cycle or detergent is used. A simple, consistent routine protects the pieces you use every day.

Start with the care label

The care label on the item should always guide your decisions. It tells you whether the piece needs a cold, warm, or delicate wash and whether bleaching or tumble drying is appropriate. If in doubt, choose the gentler option.

Choose cool or warm water and a mild detergent

Cold or warm water is usually kinder to fibers than hot water. Use a mild detergent and avoid using more than the recommended amount. Excess detergent can remain in the fabric and leave bedding feeling stiff. For most loads, avoid chlorine bleach unless the care label specifically permits it.

Give bedding room to move

Do not overfill the washer. Sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers need room to circulate so that water and detergent can rinse through evenly. Wash similar colors together and close any zippers or fasteners before washing duvet covers.

Dry gently and remove promptly

Low heat or air drying is often the safest choice for bedding. Remove the load as soon as it is dry to minimize wrinkles. A little care at laundry time can help bedding look inviting and feel comfortable for longer.
