Extra blankets and warmer bedding are useful when the seasons change, but poor storage can lead to trapped odors, moisture, and creases. A few practical steps make seasonal swaps easier.

Clean before storing

Never store bedding that has been used without washing or dry cleaning it according to its care label. Invisible body oils and moisture can become harder to remove over time and may attract pests.

Make sure every piece is completely dry

Even slightly damp fabric can develop mildew in storage. Allow pieces to air fully after laundering, especially thick comforters and quilts, before folding them away.

Choose a cool, dry location

A clean linen closet, under-bed storage container, or breathable fabric bag works well. Avoid damp basements, hot attics, and tightly sealed plastic when there is any risk of trapped moisture. Add a labeled note with size and season to make the next changeover quick.

Avoid heavy compression for lofty fills

Vacuum bags can save space, but they can also flatten some fills when used for a long period. For down-alternative comforters and similarly lofty pieces, use a roomy bag or container whenever possible.
