Pillows do more than complete the look of a made bed. Their loft, cleanliness, and condition can affect how comfortable your neck and shoulders feel overnight.

Use a protector and wash pillowcases regularly

A washable pillow protector creates a useful barrier between the pillow and everyday oils, hair products, and perspiration. Wash pillowcases weekly and wash the protector according to its label.

Fluff and air pillows often

Gently fluff pillows each morning or whenever they feel compressed. This helps redistribute the fill and releases moisture collected during the night. On a dry day, airing pillows near an open window can also help them feel fresher.

Wash only as the label allows

Some pillows can be machine washed, while others need spot cleaning or professional care. Always check the individual care label. If machine washing is permitted, use a balanced load and dry completely; a damp center can lead to odor or mildew.

Know when to replace a pillow

A pillow may be ready to replace if it stays flat after fluffing, has persistent odors or staining after cleaning, or no longer provides comfortable support. Replacing pillows when needed is one of the simplest ways to improve a sleep setup.
