The best bed is not necessarily the heaviest or the most elaborate. It is the one that lets you adjust easily as room temperature and seasons change.

Begin with breathable sheets

Sheets are the layer closest to the body, so feel and breathability matter. Choose a set you enjoy using year-round, then adapt the layers above it.

Add a flexible middle layer

A lightweight blanket or quilt can add warmth without trapping as much heat as a heavy comforter. It is helpful on nights when a sheet alone feels too cool but a full comforter feels excessive.

Use a comforter or duvet as the adjustable top layer

In cooler weather, a comforter gives the bed a warm, finished look. In mild weather, fold it at the foot of the bed and use the middle layer instead. A removable duvet cover makes it easy to change the room’s look without replacing the insert.

Match layers to the sleeper, not only the season

People in the same room can sleep at different temperatures. Keep an extra throw or lightweight blanket within reach rather than overheating the entire bed. Small changes in layers often make a bigger difference than buying a single, very heavy item.
